I occasionally shoot events at a small hillclimb circuit nearby. While there, I tend to split my time roughly 50:50 track and paddock, because the cars are varied and interesting, plus the amateur drivers and teams are a friendly, chatty bunch.
At one event, a gorgeous MGA was being punted up the hill by a driver whose name was familiar, though I couldn't quite recall who he was. When I confessed my poor memory, he graciously and without a shred of ego told me that he was a four-time motorcycle world champion. His name is Neville 'Kork' Ballington and he is one of the nicest fellas I've ever met at a race meeting.
Star quality he had aplenty, but he also still has nerves of steel, not because hillclimbing is particularly dangerous, but because I would have been terrified to sling such a beautiful old car up a hillclimb course. Thankfully, all went well.
