MG TD Midget
Barefoot Café, Colombo
24th January, 2021
I made a double-take when finding this beautiful MG TD Midget in the Barefoot car park.
Produced between late 1949 and 1953, the TD combined the TC’s drivetrain, a modified rear axle, the chassis of the MG Y-type saloon and the familiar T-type body. In other words, a “bitza” (bits of this, and bits of that) but done-so to get it up to scratch for the North American market.
The last place I expected to find one was Sri Lanka, never mind one so tastefully and professionally restored. I particularly liked that the original MG badges and radiator grille have been retained without restoration, the car wearing the resultant patina of age well (images here). It is so svelte and petite too next to a Volvo XC90. I know which I’d rather have a collision in but to me the MG wins hands-down for style, elegance and joie de vivre.
