I have a Canon 7D and a buddy was hoping I could take a couple of nice shots while he surfs we were looking into buying a better lens... Can anybody give me their opinion on this lens or if there is a better suggestion, I would appreciate it... Looking into: Canon EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 III Lens

A couple questions:

How far will you be from the action? Pier? Beach? That will determine quite a bit. The areas I surf and shoot are quite a ways from the beach/steps so I usually have to use a 300 with 1.4x or 2x teles. I usually shoot in the am so light has not been that big of an issue for me so you would also need to take that into consideration. If you don't want to go prime I've seen some fantastic results from the 100-400L.

Nice choice of body for sports, but the 75-300 is a sub-par lens for surf IMO. Assuming you'll be pulled out to 300mm @ f5.6, you will likely need ideal lighting conditions for producing sharp images while stopping action.
Key question, what is your budget?
