Had the opportunity to snap a lot of pictures of MC Frontalot (a nerdcore MC, for those who haven't heard of him) during a show at Stanford University in a real intimate but poorly lit setting. Here are a few shots I've gathered that seem to be good:

I'm fairly new to this, so I'd really appreciate comments and suggestions for how I could improve future shots. EXIF should be intact on all photos.

Did you shoot in RAW format? You can probably get the color much more under control if you did.

Yeah, it's all in raw. I kind of like the flavor the color brings, but what exactly are you thinking of when you suggest bringing the color more under control? Are you suggesting changing the white balance, or playing with the saturation? I'd definitely be open to giving it a try and seeing how it comes out.

I'd definitely play with the white balance to bring out the actual colors, rather than just the reds and purples of the lighting. You'd be surprised at how much you can recover.

OK I'll take a shot at it and see what I can do.

Here we go!

I was only able to "save" two of the photos. The other two were way underexposed, and looked very noisy after being WBed. What are your thoughts? I'm not sure what to do with the 2nd photo, because I liked how I was able to separate the MC from the backing band in the non-WBed photo, but I feel like the effect doesn't work as well after being white balanced. Thoughts?

The non-corrected photos probably are more "flavorful," but the problem is that there are many, many photos like that, and it gets tiring after awhile. I think the first time I saw that I thought it was super cool, but by the 100th...

For the last photo, I would really like to see a black and white version. It might accomplish the goals of the non-corrected version, without looking gimmicky.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Here's a BW version of the last photo. It definitely seems a lot clearer than both the non-corrected version and the corrected version, and I think you're right about it looking less gimmicky. It also requires less of a bump to the contrast for the image, which seems to keep more detail in the MC's face.
