Don't know if this is a step-up, or a change in brand/model you are going for. For that money you can get a new or almost new Rebel line with 2 or three lens with careful shopping. Or an older model from a higher end series with probably only one lens. I would personally go for features I felt I need, which you may find a used model provides. In my decision, I bought a new T1i to get latest features, high pixel count, knowing I already had a good inventory of Canon lens from my film units. These new cameras will be technically obsolete (read that as marketing department driven) long before they wear out, so I did not yet buy into the higher lines.

Don't forget you will need accessories to match, from flash units to software, and perhaps even new printer.....

Is it $1000 for just a camera body or body, lenses, accessories, etc?

Also do you care about video? The Canon T2i (550D) is a rather amazing video camera as well as a good photo camera.

If you care about video, go with the T2i (550D)

If you don't care about video I would get a 50D. It is a REALLY nice camera for the price IMO.

Do you really need the things the 7d offers? For a casual shooter its really not that much over the 50D. It is really a great camera and the time that you will be saving money for a 7d, you could be out shooting pictures and getting used to your 50D or what ever you choose, Instead of just sitting there wishing you had something to go and take pictures with.
