For that money you can get a new or almost new Rebel line with 2 or three lens with careful shopping. Or an older model from a higher end series with probably only one lens. I would personally go for features I felt I need, which you may find a used model provides. In my decision, I bought a new T1i to get latest features, high pixel count, knowing I already had a good inventory of Canon lens from my film units. These new cameras will be technically obsolete (read that as marketing department driven) long before they wear out, so I did not yet buy into the higher lines.

For a casual shooter its really not that much over the 50D. It is really a great camera and the time that you will be saving money for a 7d, you could be out shooting pictures and getting used to your 50D or what ever you choose, Instead of just sitting there wishing you had something to go and take pictures with. Canon 6D, Canon 50mm 1.8 STM
