OK here we go, I'm in the process of selling my 1D2 & 20D for reasons that I'm going traveling in a few months & I can't handle the weight or insurance problems etc etc. SO I've started looking for a replacement P&S digital compact, very difficult to choose!

When traveling I take more wide angle (I used my 17-40L 80% on the time last trip) so I want a P&S that can offer wide(ish) shots. And being used to 8+ megapixels I'd want to stay in that area. I have built up my collection of CF cards so it'd be nice to keep them.

Looking around the obvious Canon choice would be the PowerShot Pro1, in short how do you Pro1 users think I'll get on with it? The only other makes I've seen that might cut it are the Olympus C-8080 & the FZ Panasonics.

Oh and the ability to shoot decent movies to show my Mum would be handy too!

Thanks for any advice!

PS. I've just noticed that the Pro1 is about a year old, so in theory Canon may release a newer model before I leave at the end of the year?

Hi,
I use a Canon Pro 1 at work and a G6 for personal use. The Pro 1 is a well made camera but the lack of focus assist and its speed of focusing are big issues with me. I love the 7.1 MP G6 for ease of use and the pictures are really beautiful.

The Pro 1 is being clearanced out by many stores and the G6 stills seems to be very popular with those wanting a prosumer camera.

not sure on speeds -- but check with some online reviews of the G6 -- such as this one..

Read this over, I would actually think about going with the S2IS, its only 5 megapixles, but from what I have heard it is a really really good camera!

I think I might get one just to see how good it is.

20D to a PS Pro 1? Man, thats like going from a Vette to a Honda :p I was looking at and reading up on them before I decided on the 350D. I would check out the online reviews, some dissapointing downside to this camera you may not like, especially being used to a 20D. Most notable was its high noise level at 100 ISO or higher, not good at all. However, I do think its one of the best prosumers out there if you can live with the faults.

I have the Pro 1 and am pleased with the results I get. A major consideration for me was the flash hot shoe. I usually shot at ISO 100
and always use fill flash. My Pro 1 is relatively new and I haven't run it
thru its paces yet but it does have the flexability I need to get the varied
results I expect from type of Photo (family, landscape, wildlife, etc.)

Since you like to shoot wide, I would caution you about the Pro1's vignetting issues, which usually manifest themselves at wide angle. That being said, the Pro1 is awesome in picture quality. Despite what the some DSLR owners would say, the Pro1 can easily rival a DSLR in that regard.

As for fosusing speed, it is not on par with what you are used to with the 20D, but I found that I quickly adapted. I would estimate it is about 1/3 as fast as a 20D. Unless you will be shooting sports, or lots of action, the Pro1 should do just fine.

It really can't be beat as a travel cam, capable of serious photo work.

Have you looked at the 350D/Xt?

With the right lens it is not much larger tha many of the high zoom EVFs...

Well I ended up keeping my 1D2 & a couple of lenses, I just couldn't part with them :D

I did however buy the S2 IS for holidays, it's not as wide as I'd like so I'll either buy a wide adaptor or see what other models emerge before I leave at the end of the year. Or I'll buy a 17-40L & take the 1D :D :D

Focus speed: I don't know about the Pro1, but I've seen my G3 take several seconds to focus (or decide it couldn't). Even if I preset manual focus, the G-series shutter lag makes me miss shots, but in autofocus mode I just can't shoot fast-breaking stuff like kids and sports. Maybe a better photographer than me wouldn't be bothered. Of course, for "standard" travel shots, it's hardly any problem at all.

Wide angle: my lifesaver there is panorama mode. I try to emulate a pano head, rotating around the lens center rather than my feet. Sometimes I do pretty well, sometimes I screw up royally. It partly depends on what you're willing to settle for, and how much postprocessing work you're willing to do. I have a shot of an inlaid mosaic table that just barely didn't fit the frame; a 2-shot panorama was the perfect solution and was easy to stitch (probably 95% overlap sure helped!). But last week I shot the cockpit of a friend's boat, again a 2-shot pano, and even after a lot of tweaking and blending the stitch was pretty poor. Fortunately, I didn't need perfection on that one.

Gee, I'll trade you my G3 for your 20D, one-for-one. :D

Geoff
All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?
