Is Dlite 4 bears the weight of an octogonal 47.2" softbox?

I used to regularly use a 60" Photoflex octa on one of my Dlite-4's, and it worked...but had to be watched closely. It felt borderline on the old Dlite-4 mount. I'm not sure if the new Dlite-4's are improved in that area.

Cameras: 1DX, 1D4, 20D, 10D, S90, G2
Lenses: Canon 10-22mm, 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, 300mm f2.8L IS, 200mm f2L IS, 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.2L, 1.4x TC, 2x TC, 500D macro, Zeiss 21mm
Lighting: 580EX, Elinchrom 600 RX's, D-Lite 4's, ABR800, 74" Eli Octa, 100cm/70cm DOs, Photoflex Medium Octa and reflectors, PW's, Lastolite Hilite, Newton Di400CR bracket

I don't think you'll have a problem with a 48" modifier. Some people have very successfully used 60" Octa's and others have reported that the mount and housing are just not strong enough.

Assuming that the accessory mount is strong enough you can eliminate the swivel mount for the light stand by using the Photoflex (or equivalent) speed ring (external link) and mount the speed ring to the light stand via the threaded 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 on the speed ring. Mounting it this way removes all the weight and stress that was on the swivel mount and now it's moved to the speed ring. For an octa where you don't need to rotate the modifier it's a great solution, but keep in mind that this only works IF the accessory mount on the strobe can safely support the modifier in the first place.

I use my 53" octo on my D4 without any problems. I've bolstered up the pivot arm screws though.
