i just got my 135 f2L in from BH and i noticed it makes a bit more noise autofocusing as my 70-200 f2.8L does for instance...

i was curious to see if anyone has had any similar issues or if this was normal...

my 17-40L is also quiter than the 135L

thanks

Abel,.. mine is dead silent as well.. i've put them side to side.. but I've never perceived that it was any louder than my other USM lenses.

I think the word 'silent' is very subjective. You are still moving a lot of glass around and you can hear it, certainly. If there is background noise, then obviously it seems less loud.

However, with the hood, it makes rather more noise – the hood seems to amplify it. Do try a test yourself. It's always a little worrying to hear any noise from a lens, but you may have to adjust your expectations.

ok, to quantify a bit - it's probably the quietest lens i have, hood or not. i suppose if abel is hearing something quite a bit louder than his 17-40, then it could be something worth checking out.

Keep us posted Abel. It would be good to hear if it is significantly quieter.

i called the toll free number on the warranty card and actually got to speak to a lens technician and i explained the issue and told him it was considerably louder than my 17-40L and my 70-200 f2.8L..

he said that is not at all normal and the 135L should be as quiet is not quieter than those other lenses... he recommended that i return it and have BHPhoto test out a new 135L prior to sending it to me..

so thats what ill do... ill get it in the mail tomorrow. ill keep u guys informed
