I decided to use the 50 1.8 that I had at the time for my last one, and just could not auto focus in that limitted light. I could have gotten away with no flash for a lot of pics but I don't like how the XTI handles higher ISO's. I've gotten good pics at 800 and 1600 ISO's but I find there is less room for error. and if you don't get it just right there is a lot of noise. #2 I had to use a flash because of the obvious extreme back light behind the baby, but #4 was no flash. I had the camera on manual and when I did use the flash I used a 430ex with a stofen FEC+1.
