I don't think there's any official rules on this... but generally, I'd say that sunsets where the sun is visible are still before civil twilight, which means they're not quite considered night time.

Newbie here... First cam T2i... now having it for 10 months, I'm ready for a more advance cam. trying to learn as fast as possible.

Here are some "Night/street" pics. Gotta love Target and Best Buy parking lights!!!

If y'all can critique my pics, good or bad, I'd appreciate it.

I really like the first shot.. I like that you got "texture" in the shot. I almost wonder if you could get some more light (really diffused) into your shot from the sides (so that you can't tell it's there really, just enough light to add some more depth to things like the ripples in his pants).

The second shot would be ideal with some further side lighting. I'd also like to see a bit different framing and composition. With the 2nd shot, it would be ideal if the camera was a bit further to the left so that you couldn't see his other foot and the other hand was more visible.

I definitely dig the vibe you've got going, just think you could pull a bit more "rawness" from them. Wonder if you process these a bit more with a pseudo HDR effect, might be cool too. Nice work.

ooh nice. I feel like I don't see enough night shots of LA at the various spots. I mean like, good night shots. I mean like, the city. and outlying.

Thanks!!! There's several nice locations to shoot 'nightscapes' in-and-around LA... High ground usually presents the best opportunities for night captures... Here's a few more from my Flickr Vault (sorry if I've posted these before)...

16 stitched pano... A must see in its "original" view...

^^ cool. I was in LA in January (unfortunately without my DSLR) and saw an amazing view of the city from Sunset Blvd.

^ Yup... Lots of good shots can be had @ Sunset Blvd; cityscapes, nightlife, and people... BTW, if you had to recommend 3 spots to shoot @ in Chicago, what would you recommend? I'll be staying @ Crown Plaza on Huron Street..

:)
