Very nice.

So Todd, how far do you have to drive from Dallas to get a great view of the stars. I grew up there and my family still lives there. Out in the country was the only time I really saw a starry sky. One day, I wnat to show my son, but here you usually see the moon and maybe an airplane or two. O_o

Typically, it's at least 1.5 hr drive to get to decent skies. From DWF, the closest is to head north to the OK border area (pretty decent dark) or head west of Fort Worth and then a bit north (there's not much up that way, so gets pretty dark out there).

Generally, heading east or south of DFW is not very good, too much light pollution.

A good site to find dark areas is: http://www.jshine.net …lution=true&selected_id=1 (external link)

As you can see on that, you generally want to get to purple or grey areas. Green is okay, but anything yellow is a lost cause.

Todd,

From your map I find I would have to travel 400-500 miles west to get anything purple! That is discouraging to say the least....

Thanks man. I will check these out. I just went back for T-day to visit the family. My sister lives in FW now so perhaps one day I can take the little punk there and drive a bit. I never realized how much I took the country for granted. There are some spots here but they take a while to get to, and they also take effort and money to get to.

I don't know about that...:) I live at the border of orange and yellow (albeit at 9,000' elevation), but can do decent astrophotography from my backyard...

I'm not saying you can't see stars... (and today's sensors are sensitive enough to pull in amazing amounts of light).

I can actually pull stars out of the skies directly above downtown Dallas... but it's certainly not an ideal area to be if you're wanting to shoot astro stuff.

Wow, I'm at least an hour and a half away from decent skies (and in another state) :(. A good resource though, thanks for posting it up.
