Isn't it a little odd there aren't ANY preview/reviews of the 17-50? I'm having a very hard time debating between the siggy 17-50 and the canon 17-55. I'd be pretty pissed to wait and have it be quite a disappointment!

Well, that's kinda how it works with new lenses... cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

I'm hoping I'll be able to buy it locally for around the same price as B&H/Adorama (just like the Tamron 17-50VC) and hopefully no more then $670 or so. As long as it's returnable, or gets really good reviews then I'll buy it, otherwise I will search for a good used 17-55IS. Sony A6000, 16-50PZ, 55-210, 35mm 1.8 OSS

Sure, I do. I've never seen a copy, but I think it will be 42 times better. cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

How the "similar lenses" tend to compare and how Sigma's quality is overall. My Landscape Photography Videos

I wouldn't expect the lens to perform better optically then the 17-55, but it will have a nicer build quality and HSM is very close to USM as far as effectiveness. The OS in the Sigma lens is a new 4 stop system, whereas the IS in the Canon is the older 3 stop model. The zoom ring will probably be much nicer on the Sigma as well, especially if you want to use the manual focus ring. Sigma also has a longer warranty, but they take longer to fix lenses than Canon does. Just a thought from Daniel

The point is that every lens is different, so there's no answer besides guesses. cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Sigma also has a longer warranty, but they take longer to fix lenses than Canon does. If it was me, I would wait for some tests to come out for the lens. A used 17-55 can be had for around $800 or so if you are patient, but the Sigma should be cheaper than that. If it is a good performer, I see no reason why to choose the Canon over the Sigma. That being said, I doubt I will sell my 17-55 unless the Sigma is proven to be better optically. The 17-55 has been an excellent lens, sharp even at f/2.8 at all focal lengths. It also has lightning fast autofocus and a very smooth IS system. The only thing that I don't like about the lens is the zoom ring which is nothing to brag about. My Sigma 70-200 is much nicer. That and build quality. The 17-55 is a dust barrel. It's well built, but for a similar price the 24-105L is built like a tank when you compare the two.
