I gave up and just bought a second hand 85mm f1.8. It is not like there aren't already some good 85's out there.

The Sigma 85 is going to be 2x the price (or more) so that is a good choice. If you find you use 85mm extensively, or find the need to upgrade, then you can easily sell the Canon. I like mine, and probably will not upgrade unless the Sigma is VERY good and a VERY good deal.

Yeah, that is what I figured. Although if the Sigma 85 is as good and "magical" as my 30mm, I might pay quite a bit for one. What a nice pair that would be... :)

^ oh yes. But i'm leaning toward rokinon 85...it's way cheaper, and does deliver way over his price point :/ Don't know what to do! (i don't mind MF - i use 90% of the time)

I agree with Palaima, did some research on the rokinon 85, seems like a pretty nice lens. If the 85 from sigma surpasses $1000 (CAD), even for the quality of the 30mm, I may have to consider the rokinon instead.

Wow, 35 pages of assumptions, predictions, opinions and ravings on a handful of new lenses.
Should've started on this 3 months ago, wouldn't have been such a read in one go then :P

What brought me here? Rumours about a Sigma 85mm, that's what. Want. But if it's going to be >€800, I might have to reconsider...

Well, here's a post containing samples of 1/5 :p

On an interesting side note of digging around the web, a swedish site is stating the distributor for sigma lenses is listing an availability date of 5/18 for the 17-50.

Sigma's got some finely designed lenses. The really big problem with that brand is, though, that they seem like they never heard the concept of Quality Control. One copy of any Sigma lens may be fine and another one of the same lens - total crap.

Most often, their lenses show excessive off-center misalignment, which causes decreased sharpness and/or increased chromatic aberration in parts of an image. Unfortunately, those faults usually surface after testing a lens at camera store and after a purchase. So, there's always a risk.

Regards from macanonline.

thanks for that.... so were looking at around $900US price tag give or take. Now the question becomes is this lens worth double that of the Canon 85 1.8. I think not but time will tell.
