I just got a new Manfrotto ballhead tripod (head #496RD2). It has a small knob (friction) and a large knob (lock). This may sound simple (this is my first ballhead) but which is the best way to adjust the head - which knob when? Thanks.

Mount camera/lens that you are planning on using and start tightening the friction knob, until the camera/lens, with hands off, does not drop. Try different positions, pointing straight away, slightly down, etc. Once you get this equilibrium, make sure that you can still adjust the camera/lens on the head by just grabbing the camera/lens and moving it. If too tight, back off the friction control just a tiny touch. Once adjusted, leave the friction control alone and use the main knob to loosen/tighten downt he head. Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Feb 20, 2010 20:15 | #3 Thanks for the quick reply. I've always used the heads with three handles that are self-explanatory. I got this because it was lighter and more compact for when I go outside. 1DX MK II, 5D MKIV x2, 24L II, 35L II, 50L, 85LIS, 100LIS Macro, 135L, 16-35LIS, 24-105LIS II, 70-200LIS, 100-400LIS II
