Should I bring a back-up camera?

I'm going on a six day road trip around Utah in a few weeks. People are telling me that I should bring an extra camera just in case something happens to mine. Do you think it's a good idea? Also, do you know if there's anyone who will rent me a camera body (Nikon D90) for 1-2 weeks?

I find a nice point and shoot works as a back up camera. If you are doing photography as work, a back up DSLR is probably better but, if it's leisure, I wouldn't want to carry around the extra weight.
