I'm ditching the 2 way pan head that come with my Slik Sprint EZ Pro tripod. Currently I'm looking at the Manfrotto 496 and 498 ball heads. There is a $40 difference between the two.

Primarly I'll be using my sigma 10-20 lens, but I might use my canon 70-200 2.8 from time to time. Nothing larger or heavier than those two.

Should I go for the 496? Or should I spend a little bit more and get the 496?

Camera is a 40d btw...

498? =)

I would get the 498 just because it is better to have more weight capacity than less =)

Having a panning base is very convenient. Go for the 498.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

+1

It's a real hassle to loosen the entire head assembly, instead of just a pan lock.
Crucial if panoramas are your thing.
