OK so I went with 6400 ISO again and 1/500 shutter, f3.2, but seemed to get more noise with these than usual. Maybe because of the prison uniforms and the yellow too? All ran a bit through Noiseware as well as some NR in Lightroom. I think maybe I brightened these up too much in post as ice seems really hot in some compared to others from this season. That's my old team!
#2 does seem very noisy.
As well the ice seems a bit blown out in most of them.
That jersey just doesn't like to be photographed.
Otherwise, I love them. I wish you were around 25 years ago when I played for them.

Cinq:

Thanks! Unfortunately DSLRs and 6400 ISO were not around 25 years ago and I suspect the lighting in Pearkes Arena is just as bad now as it was then!!

That red doesn't like the higher ISO but I'm sure you could work on it a bit more if necessary. You do what you have to to get the shots. Otherwise, good pics as always, Christian.

Wow...6400 ISO on 40D/50D looks pretty good (after you cleaned them up).

Yep! Nicely placed so that it is in the background of many of the shots of players skating out of this end! It was actually part of my "payment" for shooting the team this season.

5 and 6 look a little bright to me, but the others look fine exposure wise. The noise does seem to be a bit more noticeable than your usual images. For these web sized images it is not too bad, but I wonder how they would print. Lots of faces and pucks which is something I like to see.

They look fine to me. I was recently playing with another member's 1DMKIV at 6400, and that baby is clean as a whistle. Amazing.

Drop the ISO down. You don't need to shoot that high do you? Around 1000 should be great for what you are doing. Start and 400 and work up til you find the minimal iso setting.

In order to get acceptably high shutter speeds, he does need to be at high ISO, but perhaps 3200 or 4000 would do.

Great job on these, you make it look easy, and hockey is probably the hardest sport to shoot.
Exposure looks pretty good on my calibrated monitor, I would rather have the ice blown and proper exposure on the player.
Since you were getting only 1/500s at ISO6400, I wouldn't have gone any lower in ISO (I find blurring even at 1/500s in junior hockey).
I love hockey pictures, so thanks for posting!
