This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #261".

This contest ends at 1:00pm EST Feb 24th 2010 (or Russian Federation time: 21:00 GMT+3 Feb 24th, 2010)

===============

Here is a photo I took at an antique market which usually sees alot of tourism.

I could never really think of how to PP this one, so ya'll can have a hand at it instead.

I recommend using the large jpeg: Link (external link)
If need be, I could even upload the Raw, though I doubt the shadows & highlights are that bad.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

A fair bit of cloning to remove extraneous people.
A fair bit more cloning to cover up the mess left over from cloning out people.
More cloning to fix the previous mess and remove bad shadows. etc.
Blurred some of the cloned areas slightly, then added noise to hide the smoothness (typically 1-2% gaussian or uniform).
Warp tool to bend the kids tape streamer inwards and upwards so that it would all be in the frame after cropping.
Levels (auto - very minor), curves (to bring out shadows, and to enhance boys face).
Contrast on some small areas.
Saturation up (~10%), then warming filter (~25%).
Unsharp mask (two passes: 6%, 66 pix for contrast enhancement, then 75%, 1 pix for sharpening).
Crop.

50% grey layer and paint white on man in striped jumper and black on the chap in white.
Lightened boy's face and darkened the overexposed bits of his arm and leg.

Lore: Nice crop and zoom effect, B&W looks good on this one.
reisset: Composition is kinda strange and uhh... selective color. It's ok I guess.
FstopMiami123: Damn, look at dem halos! not really a fan of psudo-HDR effects though.
jay415: Nice clone work with the dog, but you didn't really need to keep the original crop.
Palladium: This one looks pretty lively, and the lollipop goes with the outfit. nicely done.
sparkin: Wow, you really cloned all that stuff out! though the leaves are a little too bright/ distracting and warmer is nice, but also looks to have gotten a pink tint.
NigelD: I like the vignette, though the image is probably too saturated for an old-looking photo. also, the arm looks weird, with him not holding anything...
blsvlo: ooh, I really like this one... it looks kinda silly, but it does away with all that I didn't like about the original photo, as in everything :)

And the winner is...

blsvlo! ...for not fixing was was broken, but breaking it even more until it became art.
