Did this earlier for my own edification and thought others might find it interesting.

I took multiple shots of a wall unfocused, no sharpening, no noise reduction either in camera or PP. I did a snippit from DPP
so I could look at samples side by side.

I only did the 200% because others have done so and then complained about noise patterns, I don't see any. Usually I won't even bother with 100%, its like using a bigger and stronger magnifying glass to look at news print and then complaining about the size of the dots. I am very happy with the 7D and don't like to pixel peep. I find this to be interesting though since with my 40D I get cleaner images at ISO 160 than at 100 but with the 7D 100 and 200 work best... almost equally.

Can you explain your test a little more clearly. I'm not understanding what's going on.

Stellgar
Thanks for the post.
I love the 7D, but It's uses are pretty specific.

Doesn't the 7D have 6400 as well? Is this shot properly exposed?

I didn't use all the ISOs available, just the ones I have been using the most or am interested in using. I did a very simple test shot. I pointed the camera at a white wall about six feet away used the on board flash, RAW, AWB, turned off all noise and sharpening, manual focused out of focus since I was more interested in camera noise than wall texture. I am sure that since the wall was a off white the exposure was puled down to represent 18% gray, histogram is centered. Opened all the files in DPP once at 100% and then again at 200% staggered them in order and used the W7 Snipping tool to grab the screen image.

I might be wrong but wouldn't there be less apparent noise if you shot a gray wall (instead of white under exposed)so the shots wouldn't be underexposed?

Probably here is the range from 100-12800 with a more correct exposure overexposed by about 1.5 stops puts the histogram to the right without clipping, viewed at 100%. All shots were in RAW no noise reduction either in camera or PP.
This was done just to give me a little more accurate info and thought I would share.

Nice - coming from a 30D perspective that's pretty damn tight.

hey how about 10 million percent? These aren't really useful without shooting another camera at the same target and conditions to compare against.
