I've Googled around and searched here but haven't found anything specific, other than "Replace with a Canon 58mm lens cap".

What's actually happened is that I bought an SX10 last year, and it's had a lot of use. (It's been teaching me how to use a camera, and is quite good at it...!)

However, the lens-cap now no longer stays on firmly. That is, it goes "into place" but doesn't clip on properly. Can it be fixed?

The Canon 58mm snap-on lens cap is only $16.00 (US$14.50) - here, so isn't expensive, but I was wanting to keep my SX10 as "all SX10".

Or is there a better solution for this minor annoyance?

Regards, Dave.

The SX10 actually takes a 52 mm lens cap. I think you'd need to call your local Canon Parts Service, part of the national Canon facility, to order the SX10's cap.

You need lensmate or Janco 58mm Filter (external link) Adapter to use that Canon 58mm lens cap. canon 58mm lens cap is around $10 at Amazon. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get that since you can use more things with that 58 filter adapter.

Alos there is this Canon E-52U 52mm Snap On Lens Cap at Amazon for $8.

Thanks for the replies.

The camera is still under warranty, but I don't know if a non-functioning lens-cap is a warranty claim - and with the penalties that apply if it isn't, I won't be taking it to Canon to find out.

Quote: > "IMPORTANT: Please be advised that a minimum charge of $50.00 Inc. GST applies to all rejected, out of warranty repairs and no-fault-found assessments. This excludes a return shipping cost of $14.30 Inc. GST where applicable." < End quote.

Which is on Canon Australia's Camera Service and Repairs page.

However, the site of the place where I bought the camera displays both 52mm, $8.00, and 58mm, at $16.00, size caps.

While I do have the Lensmate adaptor, I want to leave a polariser on that, so will go with the 52mm one. At that price, as they seem to wear quickly, I might as well get a spare, too.

Strange that a $600.00 (US$480.00) - camera has such a flimsy lens-cap - my older and cheaper Fuji S2000HD has a much more substantial - if lumpy - cup-type cap...

Thanks again to both of you for the advice.

Regards, Dave.

Trust me lens cap loss has been a LONG TIME problem with photography.
Even if they fit good....you take em off and forget where you put them.
Or get intent on your subject and walk away and leave em where ya laid em down.

So don't feel bad it's a common thing to happen! ;)

Graphyfotoz - Hi! Actually, I still have the darned thing - it's just worn and refusing to grip when put in place. I have used the camera a lot, and when wandering around, tend to put the lens-cap on between actual shootings, "just in case", so it's been on and off many times.

The kind folk above have put me right about replacing it with a std Canon 52mm lens cap, at a quite low price. I don't know if those ones are as flimsy as the original Canon put on my 'cheap' $600.00 P&S SX10..... Maybe the ones intended for DSLR lenses are somewhat more robust.

What puzzles me a bit - is that the SX10 comes with a twist-on hood, which is easy to fit. If Canon needed to save money on a P&S camera, couldn't the lens-cap have been a more solid twist-on, I wonder? Instead of the supplied hood, which is so shallow that it seems not to do much - so a twist-on cap might have been a better alternative. And those actually wanting a hood, could buy a longer and more effective one.

Thanks for your interest,

Regards, Dave.

You can get 58mm lens caps at B&H starting at $4.50. Order a half dozen or so to make shipping worth while. I keep plenty of them on hand, and I dont' let them dangle from a string so I don't lose them. When I lose one, I just reach in my pocket or bag and get another one!
