I do not have any experience with Photoshop. I can get a reduced price through student pricing however not on CS 4, only on CS 4 Extended. It appears that Extended not only includes the CS 4 package but also 3D capabilities(which I won't use). Other than wasted hard drive space are there any significant disadvantages to purchasing the Extended version? Any assistance would be appreciated.

No disadvantages. If you didn't know this functionality was there, you would never know the difference. Insignificant if any HD space difference. Criminy... a couple 16bit Tifs take up more space than Photoshop!

I don't think it will even take up more HD space. As the activation process depends on the "key" entered, it will either appear as a CS4 standard or Extended version.

Due to a "mix up" in my license issued to me, first time round my copy activated as "extended" on my machine!

However, I requested (and was given) a basic license key as I discovered that any future upgrades - for the CS4 Extended version, would cost me more than the Standard version - and it was simply functionality I didn't need.

Thanks for the responses. There is so much that I don't know about all aspects of digital photography it gets a bit overwhelming at times.
