Interesting offer - should I jump on it?

Hey Guys,

I searched on this (maybe I just suck at searching this forum).

I was going to get a 7D soon for sports photography (Body Only) but a buddy of mine came on hard times and is willing to sell me this package for 2000USD:

Nikon D300S (less then 5k pics)
Nikon 17-55 mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens
Nikon 50 mm f/1.4D AF Zoom Nikkor Lens


What would you do? And how is the D300S. I see the reviews and they say its an excellent camera comparable to the 7D?

Lets see.... the D300S would be worth around 1400, 50/1.4 around 250 and the 17-55 around 1000

1400 + 1000 +250 = 2650

Good deal... but you are invested in Canon, but you could sell everything you have for a decent price as well.

Ya I actually was thinking about just keeping the T1i and let my girlfriend use it, and I would use Nikon, but I have never used a Nikon before so a little unsure.

Is the D300s pretty good? Especially at a good price?

I think the 7D has better high ISO than the D300s, but I'm not sure about AF speed

Not sure I'd do it if I was keeping the T1i around .. can't share lenses or anything.
Altho, if the g/f starts producing better pictures than you I guess you could always blame the Nikon

You are making a big mistake here. You already have a Canon and you shouldn`t switch right now.
You really have to think this hard if I were you.

You seem to have a good friend around? Mind if you share his email address?

Since your goal is sports photography you might consider what sort of need you might have for 300+ mm glass, and the options that you have in either Canon or Nikon.

There's really no difference between a D300s and a 7D and it is a good deal. If you don't want to switch brands, then I am sure you could help him sell it for more than $2000.

Ya I think I am gonna help him out and give him the cash for it, he could use it fast. Ill let you know how I like it.

I am keeping the T1i and all the lenses as well, just keep them around in case I do go the 7D route eventually.

It's a good deal but you're already pretty invested in Canon at this point. The two setups aren't too much different (assuming you get a 7D later) so I say just stick with Canon.

I'd sell the lenses so you can get a real sports telephoto for your new D300. Put the 70-200 F4 and 17-55 IS towards a 70-200 VR or similar.

It is a very good deal. If I were you, I will jump on it. Use Nikon for a short while and see how you like it. If you ended up not liking it, you can sell the whole setup and won't lose a penny, probably even make some money out of them. So why not do it.

In terms of D300s vs 7D, they are very compatible in almost every way. One would have small edge in some areas, and vice vesa. I won't concern about the quality and ability between these two bodies.

Ya I didn't think about it like that actually. I can easily break even if I dont like it, and then just get the 7D, and get to help out a friend in the process. Hell if he gets back on his feet (I am sure he will) Ill sell it back to him...for 100 more

I would buy it, try it, and flip it for more $$$ if it's not your thing..

As suggested before buy it, use it and flip it (if it isnt your thing).
