Hi,

I am looking to round out my zooms on full frame. I am currently working with the 17-40 F/4L and the 70-200 F/4 ISL and am completely content with those two extremes. I want to add a fast standard zoom to fill the gap and I am debating between the Tamron 28-75 and the 24-70L.

I have owned both the 24-70L in the past (should have never let it go!) and I've been through several copies of the Tamron (with quite a bit of copy variantion) that I have used mostly on crop bodies. I have borrowed two different copies of the Tamron and used them on my 5D - one had dreadful performance and the other was quite good. I have also rented the brick once for use on FF and it delivered good results.

So fullframe users... what are your thoughts on using the Tamron on your FF bodies? The good, bad, and ugly. Can it perform well on FF? Autofocus speed aside, are you finding it accurate and sharp from wide open? Do you find corner performance to be unsatisfactory?

*** subnote - I enjoy the lower cost and size/weight savings the Tammy affords over the Brick -I can buy the brick, or I can buy the tamron + another lens I've been lusting after (either the 35L or 135L).

Cheers!

I love, love, love my 24-70.

I took a gander at your gear list though, and you need a prime!

I'd say if you can afford it get the 28-75 and 35L.

Well you already got the wide end and long ends covered. Maybe just a good, mid-range prime instead of the 28-75/24-70? 35L, 50L? Sigmalux?

thanks for the input guys - I'll admit that I do have a secret agenda with this thread - to convince myself that the 28-75 will work well on my 5D so that I can splash out on something like the 35L as well, otherwise it would just be the 24-70L or a prime. I'd love to have the best of both worlds, zoom + prime.

I was a lot happier with my 28-75 when I went from a 40D to a 5D and, later to a 5DII. Focus accuracy and consistency improved noticeably. It sometimes was off just a touch on the 40D.

It has never entered my mind to replace it.

I wouldn't shoot large groups at 28/f4, wih people anywhere near the borders but, I don't use it that way so that's moot.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I have a similar lens line-up as you do. when i moved to full frame i bought a 17-40 (my least used lens btw) and already had my 70-200/4IS. i was torn between the same midrange zooms as you are. i boguht a 28-75 used figuring if i didnt like it i could always sell it and buy the 24-70.

it's still in my bag. i did a side by side for a while with my friends 24-70 and just couldn't see a difference. especially a difference in price.

for $300 used the 28-75 is a hell of a lens. my friend shoots mostly film and makes his 24-70 available to me any time i want it. i have never asked.

Joe- 2 bodies, L 2.8 zoom trilogy and a couple of primes

Still back and fourth about the Tamron or the Brick on FF, giving this a bump for some further input. I'm not concerned with the build quality differences, my main focus is on the image quality differences and to a lesser extent the auto focus accuracy/speed.
