Alright, so, I have a 430EX II, and I want to use it off-camera. Problem is, I don't have a 580EX II, or a wireless transmitter. I want to be able to trigger the flash off camera directly with a single transmitter, without having to send it through a strobe sync or anything. Is this possible? I'm not sure, but I really hope it is.

There are several radio triggers available but they all require a receiver as well. This means two parts for your next purchase; a transmitter and a receiver.

Are you wanting to retain TTL functionality?

Ah, alright. And yes, I want to retain TTL functionality. I just don't want to buy the canon transmitter/receiver because it's too expensive.

At this point, you cant retain ettl and do it cheap. You can get a set of the rf 602 trigger/receiver on ebay for $40. they only work manuall but Ettl is overated for off camera work anyway.

Cheapest off camera solution while retaining TTL would be with flash cords.

If you really want ettl, then cables are fine, but you are better off using manual for most things IMO. Rf 602's if you decide to give manual a try =)

How much are you wanting to spend? The ST-E2 can be picked up for around $100 to $150. That's what I picked up recently and it's treating me well so far.

i recently bought these wireless triggers. They were incredibly cheap but work perfectly with my 430ex. Don't know how long they will last but for $24 it's pretty solid.

I'm aiming for under $50--temporarily of course. I'm kind of dry in terms of money right now-- I just got my flash, my tripod (<3 it) and my battery grip (also <3 it), so I'm kind of out right now.

Well, then for ETTL you can only afford an ETTL cord. Go to flashzebra.com for this.
