A couple of years ago I decided that I was going to improve my photography by taking a photography workshop each year. I've taken one OK one and one lousy one. I'm looking for a great one for this year. So I'm interested in hearing about any and all workshops you might have taken.

Criteria :

  • In North America
  • Cost < $1500
  • Great instruction/critique. I don't want something where we just go on a group shoot (although that is a valuable way to learn). I can get a lot of that locally and for free.
  • Interests would be Landscapes, Nature, and lighting, but open to most types of photography.
  • Intermediate/Advanced. I know how to use every function on my camera, proficient in Lightroom and Photoshop. So I don't need something catering to people who don't know such things.

You can find something for just about everyone at Friends of Arizona Highways (external link).

I've only done a couple of their two-day hit and run sessions but I understand their longer ones are quite enjoyable. Especially the trips to Reservation areas. The magazine and its photographers have a very good rep state wide and are very welcome in those areas.

Thay may border too much on the "group shoot" thing you don't want but some of the places they go, that's the only way you'll get decent access.

There are travelling SAT/SUN seminars given by various photographers, camera companies, and schools. I've attended several George Lepp ones, a National Geography one, and Rocky Mountain School of Photography. I'm attending an RMSP week long seminar on Macro this summer up in Missoula. I got something out of all of the seminars but I'm pretty experienced in this stuff so most of what I got was stimulation and a few ideas. Check any photo mag. They all advertise their schedules toward the back.
