These were taken at Mount Seymour in Vancouver, BC last weekend. I was told Nike just spent $60K (don't hold me to it) on a new terrain park. There were a total of 5 contests and I was there working with Dreamwave Productions, Marie-Andrée Racine and more! They had a rail contest to open the new park and it was a blast. Free food, drinks and clothes (everything from hats to shirts/hoodies to shoes). Much appreciated Nike!

The photos are pretty much straight out of the camera. Gear used: Canon 30D, Canon 10-22mm, Custom WB (Grey Card). Shots were taken by hand @ 1/2000th in M (settings vary). Just looking for a little C&C. Enjoy!

Ya need to move around and get some better angles. These look like ya pretty much just stood there and snapped some pics. In the second 2 pics, views from behind the boarder are boring. Get over towards that wall and get low, looking up into the boarder's face. Something as simple as that will give your shots much more punch.

Deff cool that you got to be out there for the opening.

Harsh.. lol. But that's what I'm looking for :). Thanks (F-11) for actually providing some constructive criticism though. I'm still getting a feel for the 10-22mm and how close I actually need to get to my subject. I'll work on it though!

The 10-22 is a great landscape lens, but because of the angle of view unless you have people jumping right over you I'm not sure its right for this application. You want to draw the action into the shot, make it seem like you are closer than you are. The 10-22 is going to do just the opposite, make your close shots seem farther away.

These days, EVERYBODY has a camera of some kind. You've gotta step it up if you want to stand out.

Keep shoot'n. That's the only way to get better! ;)

personally they dont hold any creativity or composition...and shes falling off the rail in the last one, props to her though that rail is scary.

action sports are different from sports...in sports its common to get a zoomed in shot of say baseball or basketball which is fine...my style for action sports shooting is getting the rider, trick, and feature all in a nice composed shot like you would take of a scenery. if you look in any snowboard magazine all the shots seems to tell a story they arnt just close ups of the boarders.

i am just adding some C&C for next time...i was up at Seymour on saturday too didnt stick around much after 12pm because it was starting to get busy, but i got to snap a pic from the chair of the park on my gopro rails looks sweet...might go ride them tomorrow morning after work.

Having an exciting subject makes life easier as well. Someone crashing on their head, a big spray of snow, a face full of terror - all help make a photo stand out. Run of the mill practice runs all look alike after a while, but maybe try super slow shutter speeds, some flash perhaps. Lay on your back looking up. Be creative. :D

Much appreciated guys. Plenty of solid suggestions. I just started renting gear for these particular shoots and thought the 10-22 would be fun. Fun, it is.. but perhaps you're right about having to think outside the box and get creative. What do you think of the 70-200 2.8? I could rent it instead for the next trip at whistler. Feel free to suggest other lenses. Just keep in mind I'm using a body (30D) with the 1.6 crop. I was also considering a fisheye lens, but again, that might also be very situation lens. The group of athletes I'm working with have really been putting an emphasis on wanting to build their own kickers back country. Sometimes an hour long hike is involved, but we're all about the virgin powder. Next trip we should be in Whistler for 2-3 days so we might get a day in the park. All suggestions welcome! Again, thank you for the comments.

Oh.. here's another thread I started in December. More C&C welcome. Shots on this page were all done with a 28-135mm IS USM (the AF/MF button froze and snapped off back in dec. Lens is still getting fixed which is why I'm now renting).

i am a little low on lenses these days but i think you would be good with a 70-200 F4 would be fine since the majority of snowboard shoots are in super bright conditions even on over cast days with all the white you have no problem shooting about 250 at 100iso. i dont know if you like primes but i love them it makes me feel more creative because you have to move around and look for the shot...85mm 1.8 would be ideal, 17-40L wouldnt be a bad lens to invest in either...fisheyes are fun but you cant shoot a whole day on it.

if you guys ever want a 2nd shooter or another shred buddy i just moved to van and dont know anyone.

Personally I think 70-200 is a little on the long side for an event where you are free to walk around and get that close to the riders. Now if it was a pro event and there are areas where you have to stay than ya, 70-200 would be a good choice to give you that needed reach.

The 10-22 is a perfect lens for the type of shots you showed before, ya just need to move around more like has been said. try laying on your back right after a jump and get the boarders to do tricks going over top of you. Make friends with some of the people and see if ya cant get them over to an area and direct them where you want them to go. Get low, get high, move to the side, change the foreground/background to make it interesting.

With the wide end of that lens even try backing up, get the entire rail/picnic table/jump/whatever in the shot. Try standing at the end of the rail with someone and practice having them come right at you with the rail leading the eye into the shot.

Those are just some thoughts Ive been piecing together for a shoot with some friends at Snowshoe. I just have to actually get my butt out there.
