Just read that the 17-55mm has had problems with the IS. How likely is that to occur?

Don't get me nervous. I just bought one for myself for Christmas :)

But the IS motor tends to be significantly louder compared to the kit 18-55mm lens. You can hear the whizzing sound of the IS motor working every time the shutter is half pressed.

Just wondering though, I'm new to the forum...is this whizzing sound normal guys?

Welcome. I have no idea, I'm looking to pick one up. I remember the 28-135 had a small grinding sound but it was normal.

The whizzing or grinding sound is normal. I would get worried if I didn't hear that. :)

I've heard of some issues with the AF here and there but never had a problem with mine while I owned it. Lens Rentals.com has it at #2 on their lens repair data page, but (external link) read the ENTIRE page before freaking out ;)

Awesome lens, I still wouldn't think twice about picking one up if I needed it again.

I had a 17-55 for nearly 2 years and the IS on it worked like a champ. Keep in mind that folks post stuff breaking on forums a heck of a lot more than starting threads like "Hey, my lens still works like a champ"

Yeah, the sound whizzing is normal. You should try the 70-200 2.8 IS, the IS on that not only makes a noise but has a considerable clunk when it engages - kind of scared me the first time I used it.

Me too, almost felt like I was handling a weapon, not a lens

Haha. Well that's a relief to hear. Just one quick question, don't mean to veer too far off topic but, does leaving IS on reduce image quality to a minimal degree? And when I zoom in 10x on Live View to watch IS work its magic, seems like the image is slightly "floating" around from the stabilizing motor. Is this what normally happens?

Nonetheless, to respond to the thread, I've had the 17-55mm for 2 months already and absolutely love it. Indoor performance is great, especially for family parties!

The whirring noise is normal, not a big deal unless you're shooting video - then it is a bit distracting. IQ shouldn't be affected at all.
