My friend broke her XS kit lens and needs a relatively cheap replacement, $100 or so. Any suggestions?

EFS 18-55 IS.

Yes, while that is one option, I was looking for alternatives.

at that budget i don't think there are any other options...and if there are the 18-55mmIS is the best...

The alternatives are to spend a lot more or get a crappy lens. Take your pick.

Unfortunately, at that price range there isn't anything that offers 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 and IS. And if its her only lens, a nifty fifty will feel limiting for lack of focal range.

Alternately, if you are okay with a longer prime the 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens on a budget. Or if you want to spend less you could get an EF-S 18-55 (Non-IS).

Oops sorry. Just checked the price on the lens your replacing.

In that price range i would honetly probably get the same lens again. And when that one breaks, get it again.
