First attempt at black and white. Not sure if this is any good, but thought I would add it here to see what people think. There was light rain (fine drizzle!), so I didn't have much time - but I wanted to have a go anyway.

I like it. The drizzle made it pop, for sure!

The depth of field makes it looks almost like it's a miniature to me, I like it!

Nice, but did you try to lighten up the chairs a bit? They may pop out if you do.

Sounds like a good idea, but have no idea how to do it. Every time I try to do any manipulation it ends up looking bad. It seems that using imaging products takes just as much skill as using the camera (both of which I still have tons to learn about).

Any tips on how to do that would be great.

I understand what you say. I am not an expert on PS either. I have some success and some failures.

What I would do in PS is to make a duplicate background layer and use the mag lasso to outline the chair and then make a levels layer to adjust the brightness trying all three sliders.

If this works I would make another dup layer and repeat for another chair.

By doing your revs on a dup layer you don't mess the original, and can turn them on and off.

All said, I bet someone out there can offer much better advice than me.

Bye the way allingtm, what do you think of your Canon EF-S 10-22mm? I really covet one.

If you use Camera Raw, my only tip would be to use the "fill" stuff that use to brighten the blacks.
I've been struggling with the same things as you (i suck so much in computers that's unbelievable) but i have to say that Kelby's books are quite a help.
Looking at your picture, you don't look like someone who's struggling too much with post processing though :) The pic is fine as it for me
