I send two bars of chocolate with my lenes when they need fixing. You would be amazed at what chocolate does for the mood, and I want happy people working with my lenses. Everything I've sent in has come back very fast except the one time I didn't send chocolate.

bahhhh I always include a joint. That explains why I get screwed up lenses back, eh?

Isn't all this sending lenses in for calibration after they are purchased just like buying a brand new car and needing to take it in immediately to have a tune-up done to it?....Is it just the SIGMA glass that requires this process to be followed so often??....it really seems to be a very common practice after buying their products, from what I read here on POTN.

Sounds like a good idea for a poll, unless there has already been one on how many have received Sigma glass and it needed calibration or not.

EDIT: I actually started a poll about the Sigma about a year ago. Here is the result. Not specific to calibration, but is to AF.

Roger, the dude that owns lensrentals.com wrote an article about Sigma lenses and their lack of QC. Let me see if I can find it

edit: seems he took down that article. Wonder if a good ole lawyer got involved. Anyways, here's a poll at lensplay about QC:

Canon lenses - 12088 with 912 defects
The probability of getting a good lens is 92 %
The probability of getting 5 Canon lenses in a row is 68 %

Sigma lenses - 2713 with 598 defects
The probability of getting a good lens is 78 %
The probability of getting 5 good Sigma lenses in a row is 29 %

Tamron lenses - 1342 with 206 defects
The probability of getting a good lens is 85 %
The probability of getting 5 good Tamron lenses in a row is 43 %

Naw, no lawyers :D Our articles stay up 18 months and then drop off automatically. We figure they're out of date by then. Some folks from Sigma did call (not lawyers) but they were very polite. Not happy with me, of course, but polite.

We do have more recent repair data (last 6 months) posted here: https://www.lensrentals.com …11.01/lens-repair-data-35 (external link)
The Sigma 150-500 and 120-400 (the lenses mentioned int the article mentioned above) aren't on that list anymore because we stopped carrying them. The 50 1.4 hasn't been a bad actor - some calibration issues, but nothing to attract attention compared to other lenses, which is a good thing. The 50-150 f2.8, now, that one is climbing our 'problem child' charts.

Good to hear from you again :).

I wonder if Sigma and Toyota are using the same QC engineers...

I used to have a Sigma 30/1.4 that I bought second hand, no problems whatsoever with AF..
It got my hopes up for SIgma, and I got the new 24-70 HSM and BAM! front focusing issues.

I went back, got another, the same. Got yet one more, same thing. So I came back, they gave me about 5-7 lenses, everyone had the same problem. I picked a random one of those, sent it for adjustment with my 40D body, 3 weeks later and it's exactly the same! =\ I'm somewhat done with Sigma, or at least I'll demand trying several next time I buy one..

I picked up a 50 1.4 last year, front focused quite a bit. Sent it in and they said they adjusted it, but it appeared to be almost the same when it came back. Shorty after that I bought the 7d and the MA saved it, but it was close. I really hope they get it together soon, as I would really like to purchase a couple of their new lenses if they are good.

So I checked the status of my repair order online, and it looks like they've already checked it out. It says:
FIRMWARE UPDATED
ADJUSTED A.F. DATA
PLEASE SEE ATTACHED:CD
CHECKED ALL IN GOOD WORKING ORDER.

Does that mean they did anything? lol I don't like the sound of the last line.

That is what my repair order had printed on it when it was returned. My guess is that they have created a new firmware that allows them to quickly tweak AF data (probably modeled after the Canon microadjust design). So they upgraded the firmware, did some AF tests, set the AF values (probably AF step points per FL maybe?), and sent everything back.

Just a guess, but in my years of software experience, this is logical.

In the future, AF adjustments will be a snap for them most likely. In a support organization, you try to make changes to reduce your overall non-billable spend, at least in software, so you have some input into future design to help bring that non-billable expense (ie. employed people) down.
