Ok this is dumb but i bought a grip and 2 New batteries not realizing you take the one out the camera
SO if you order a grip you only need 1 extra to go with the one out the camera lol
At leased i now have a spare one :)

Duh! :-)

Like other grips, can you just insert/use a single battery in it?

You don't even *need* the extra battery, you can just use the grip with one battery in it.

If you bought the Canon grip there is a slot built into the grip for the battery door. That way you don't have to worry about losing it.

Hey, that's a great idea. Did they do that with the 5dmk2 battery grip? (I guess I would know if I read any of the paperwork that came with it, huh)

From the picture of it on Adorama's site it looks like it does! The door slots down on the side of the plastic post that goes up into the camera, on the side facing the outside of camera, toward the on/off switch of the grip.

they did that even with my old film SLR's grip. the only difference back then was you didn't even have to take the battery door off.

Hmm. Thanks, learn something new every day. Now, let me see if I can remember what I did with the battery compartment door to the 7D! :o

To the original poster: The best setup with grip is to have TWO spare batteries fully charged and in your bag at all times. Two in the grip and two spares if you'd happen to run short of power. Replace batteries with the charged ones and charge the spent batteries when you get home. Put charged batteries in camera bag for next outing.

That said, if the 7D batteries didn't cost $60 a piece, I'd have two spares like I did using the 50D and 30D!

I paid $20 for an aftermarket and have been using it, I always make sure I have the factory battery handy in all situations, so that when the camera goes dead, I just switch out to the factory battery until I can get the aftermarket one charged.

Even my Opteka brand battery grip has the little slot to hold the battery cover door. I didn't realize however that it would work with only one battery in it! Coolness.

I have a question about that, do your aftermarket batteries work as OEM ones do? (ie can you register and does it display the battery levels like normal?). I'm not looking to spend 100+ for a spare for my 7D.

To the OP, with my XSi, I always had one in the grip, 2 spares in the bag. I'd do the same with the 7D if I had a grip for it as well.
