B-Ball Lens requirements?

I got a friend at work whos Daughters are big in High School Base Ball ? Softball. And may be going to college for this also.
I know what Cameras to advise him on but not sure on best Focal Lenghts.
I am not sure of his exact buget yet. I am thinking Primes are not the way to go for him. I have seen him shoot our office camera and he gets good results with kit lens on a digital rebel but wants to take it to the next level.
Body recomendations are 40D or 7D or 1Dmk2N
Len My fave on a reasonable $ would be Sigma 120-300 F2.8
Will a 70-200 F4 cut it? I am guessing IS is not needed due to high sutter spees Any input and other lens options appreciated fro Cheap to $2K max

the 70-200 will do fine for the infield, but will not cut it for the outfield or even second base.. you will need something close to the 300 end for anything longer than that. The 120-300 would work fine. I would go with the mk2n or the 7d. just depends on what you are wanting as far as build quality and durability.

The 70-200 f4 will not cut it unless you are only shooting day games in good light. Plus you have the length problem.

For lens, if the games are typically during the day, 100-400L or Sigma 50-500mm Bigma would be my recommendation... either could be found used for well under $1000.
