The sales man is telling me the 17-55 kit camera is bad. I thought as its so cheap I can use it for starters. What do you all think. Should I forget it and get another lens. If so, what lens for a beginner?

Why is buying a camera soooo complicated?.......

Do you mean the 18-55 kit lens? I think that it is an excellent lens for starters :) In a couple of months or a year or two you can sell it for about 60-70 dlls. Go for it, don't let pushy salesmen sell you equipment that don't feel comfortable with yet or that is out of your price range.

it is ok for starter, but focal length definately too small, depending for what purposes u gonna use it. and u might outgrouwing the lense reaaaaaallllly fast, so if you can afford, buy something better, I personaly got 28-135 IS USM and it is great lenses for starters and great walk around lense, or u can buy something less expancive like Sigma or something else

For what it is, the 18-55 is actually a pretty good lens. I personally switched off using it fairly quickly, purchasing the 28-105 and then replacing it with the 28-135 IS USM......but there are occasions where I still use the 18-55. It produces some decent results.

IMO you can't replace 18-55 with 28-135... you lose 16mm equiv. and it is a lot when it's WA. A great starter lens set is 18-55,the cheap (and amazing!) 50mm f/1.8 and the sub-par-but-almost-free 75-300.
