I often wonder why "good" portraiture, or at least accepted portraiture, is about seriousness. Humor is a very important human emotion, directly linked to our evolution and survival. I want to portray that in a way that matches my feelings for people. The second shot was really just a learning process, using a single light & reflector to achieve super smooth lighting. The first shot is more indicative of where this project will head. I don't ask one bit that any one likes it (in fact, pure hatred is a desirable emotion to me), but you have to admit it's not exactly like the other portraiture you see so often especially on internet message boards.

You can take something as commonly known as classical music (Mozart, for instance) and there is a large community that understands, respects, and enjoys the music, but there is also a large group of people who think it is ancient and that "pop" music of today is superior. Feb 25, 2010 14:25 | #8 Of course, art is so subjective it's almost pointless to argue it. But again, is the composition somewhat unique? And is the overall feeling of the mood represented in other artist's work? If so, I would love some links people!

I've seen plenty of MySpace photos with people cutting half of the subjects face off. A very public image would be that of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.....obviously the two photos have been composited together but you get the point. flickr

Feb 25, 2010 23:35 | #12 Thats two faces in a rectangle. Not one face in a square. A half-face look is not the only element of the composition in my piece. Just setting the facts straight, again, I'm not seeking to convert anyone.
