All:

Im thinking of going with a sigma 50 1.4. One of the things ive heard a lot about is calibrating this lens and quality control with sigma in general. Seems like a lot of people need to do this so i thought it would be intresting to start a poll and see what people have to say. What has been your experience with your sigma lens. Doesnt matter what time you bought. So tell us what have you done to your sigma lens?

There are quite a few threads on this subject do we really need another? Also your going to get a biased opinion as people are more likely to voice their opinion when something is unsatisfactory. Go to your local store and put one on you camera and do some test shots. If it has issues try another.

So far silvrr it doesnt looked biased. 3 people have reported no problem. I understand what your saying but at the same time its just a poll and i did a search first on polls and it dealt with the AF problem. Here im just asking on calibrating it yourself. This poll came out of a suggestion from this following thread:

I don't know if you are looking for feedback just on this lens or Sigmas in general. My 100-300 f4 never needed extra calibration.

Nope just sigmas in general. People keep bringing up quality control so i wanted to poll people on thier experience with sigma. Thanks juan for taking the time!

does Micro Adjust counts as Calibration? Because it works fine on my XSi without MA but on my 7d it looks even better with a little MA.

I just returned my Sig 50mm 1.4. No it did not focus properly at 1.4 and I saw no real difference compared to my Canon 50mm 1.4. YMMV. Not worth the hassle IMO.

I had a sigma 10-20 and it was sharp sharp with no micro adjustments. My Sigma 100-300 is also very sharp and no AF adjustments either.

Hmm thanks grant for the input!

I have also seen this comment from lensrental.com

http://www.lensrentals.com …a-50mm-f1.4-hsm/for-canon (external link)

"Roger’s take Its become apparent through many tests and online forums that the Sigma 50 is a ‘special’ lens. I was glad to find this out because it was driving me nuts. Its a very nice lens when you use it just right, with superb sharpness and smooth bokeh. But here’s the summary:

1) It works very well on crop frame cameras and at middle (5 to 15 feet) distance, so its a wonderful indoor lens.

2) On full frame cameras and to a slight extent on crop frame cameras the lens exhibits what I will term ‘schizophrenic autofocus’: Closer than 5 feet it will front focus, further than 20 feet it will backfocus. This is not a calibration issue, its just how it is."

Can't answer if I returned while acquiring one model lens, but did not return while acquiring another model. Or, purchased a couple of used Sigmas from reliable sellers, to avoid any potential problem.
