I have a friend that is starting his own Home Inspection business and he needs to pickup a P&S camera so that he can document things he finds on the inspections...the issue at hand is that he hasn't worked in 3 months and funds are EXTREMELY tight for him....I am a DSLR shooter so I don't have my finger on the P&S pulse at all...I know this probably wont fit in with his current budget but keep "durability" in mind...so if possible I would love to hear some recommendations for a "budget" P&S and also recommendations for a better "durable/rugged" one for once he gets going...also doesn't matter if it is canon or not...at this point cost is a main factor.

Thanks

Thanks for the recommendation...unfortunately that is way out of his current price range but I am sure it is one he can look at down the line.

Most of the PowerShot models are pretty sturdy as long as you don't turn them on while they're in a pocket or something. Wish I could offer him much hope as a home inspector - it's a tough line to break into; our neighbors tried.

thanks...he is a former home builder with a great rep in his area but his knees forced a retirement of sorts...he went into sales about a year or so ago and that didn't work out so well and he has now been unemployed for about 3months...it is tough to crack a nut in any business now but I have my fingers crossed for him.

Well, the newly-announced A490 is $109 list and will be fine for the role, as long as he doesn't use it to rap on the walls while checking for dry rot.

Good choice. I have an A480 that I use as a "car camera", it rattles around in the glove box most of the time. IQ is very good for an under $100 (paid $89 at Best Buy) camera. Also the AA batteries are a plus for his type of use.
