Well, hope you like POTN Robb - it's a pretty good place with a lot of friendly folks willing to help, in a give and take relationship. It has it's own set of rules - nothing drastic - and most people get along pretty well. I don't see why you should have any issues here. That being said, without POTN my migration to digital would have been a lot more painful and expensive :D. So I have a lot to be appreciative of here. - Stu

.....That said, I have had NO issues with this forum thus far, I DO prefer it to FM anyways. ......

funny, I'm on FM, and my email on the account is gmail.... ;)

seriously though, use some other account to register, then swap the email in your account afterwards. Yes internet email is great, but using a non internet based account JUST to register once isn't that hard. Plus, if you get your own email at your own domain, odds are you can check that online anyway.

dpreview is the same way, the also block hotmail and yahoo.

If you knew what it's like as a forum/server admin to keep spam in check, you'd understand.

not really. The email accounts don't make a massive difference. It's getting captcha up to snuff and adding in another interactive question. Back when captcha was cracked the first time we had a massive influx of spammers. We added the secondary question and we've had ~5 spammers in a year? Sure I have a relatively small forum, but do that and the spammers will be real people, not bots. A gmail ban wouldn't help in that case anyway.

Thanks, Stu. :)

I do like it here, it's actually pretty great. 98% of the people I've run into here are great, friendly, and helpful. You're bound to get a few people who give you grief, and think their opinion is superior to yours because they have more gear, better gear, or more experience, but hey.... That's the nature of ALL forums, I suppose. I just categorize the wheat and the chaff separately, and take the negative people with a grain of salt.

I made my opinion of FM known, and The Mack seems to be taking great pleasure in checking up on this thread and continually adding his .2 cents worth. Perhaps he'll eventually run out of change and find someone else to go ride? Lol.

Really.....I can't believe that I am biting on this thread but it annoys me that someone could be annoyed by such a small thing in the grander scheme of things in life. Now are you sure you have to be sitting at your desk to get at your email.

I have an email account from my isp that I use Outlook locally but if I want to check it when I am on the road, I simply access it via their webmail option. I would be extremely surprised to a find an internet provider that did not provide this as an option available to you. Even if they don't it is possible to set up your account so that you can access it using a different email client while you are mobile.

I am not an FM fan but I also don't like some other ones out there as well. In retrospect it is not a bad forum. I think what ticked me off originally was the fact that their moderators kept a close handle on the threads and kept them on subject and got rid of the useless drivel such as one word answers and snarky commentary. I've seen many threads here where I wished that we had the same approach.

As far as the fact that they don't want to accept free email services for registration, I totally understand why they do this and they are certainly not the only site that I have run across this. I think that gmail is one of the more respectable free email services but one has to draw that line in the sand somewhere and they have simply decided no free email accounts due to the spam issues surrounding some free email providers. As someone above said, their house - their rules.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I find it interesting that so many people are bothered by such a small thing as somebody else being bothered by such a small thing.

I mean, even I don't think it's worth "fuming" over, but I don't have a problem with it being an annoyance to another person, and I certainly have no problem with them expressing their opinion about it.

Short sighted? Yes

Discriminatory? I think that is being a little harsh.

What I want to know is why someone is coming to POTN to whine about FM. If you want to get on FM that much, either get a new e-mail address or contact them directly.
