ok so my short list for tripods are:

slik 700dx

manfrotto 055xprob
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …lack_.html#specifications (external link)

i can't decide if the trick center post is worth the extra $80. i don't see myself doing much macro stuff. can someone please convince me one way or the other. i'm leaning towards the slik tripod at the moment...

Haven't used a Slik, but judging from the reviews on B&H seem to make it a good buy.

I've been using Manfrotto legs for a while, and despite the extra cost, they're well worth it. One thing I can't tell about the Slik tripod, is if you're able to disconnect the legs. Why? If you get sand, dirt, or similar debris in between the locks and legs and you need to clean it out, it's pretty simple to do on the Manfrotto I use (3021PRO).

However, if you need additional funds for a head to go with the tripod, the Slik should do just fine.

I cannot speak for the SLIK 700 but, I have modified a SLIK PRO 330DX tripod by substituting the optional shorter center column and replacing the stock pan-tilt head with an Adorama Flashpoint F-1 A/C ball head.

The setup weighs just 2.5 pounds for head and legs and the rig supports me 70-200mm f/4L IS and 40D camera just fine.

The SLIK is a very well made tripod at quite a reasonab;e price.

I am in the exact same dilemma right now.

I picked up a 055xprob at the lcs and I was suprised how heavy it was. It's definitely a sturdy tripod, but it could be a burden if your planning to do a lot of walking. Looking at the weight of the slik this could be a similiar issue, if it is then consider the 190xprob

I am actually in the process of choosing a tripod...

I have looked at SLIK and Giottos - but most of them have the threaded lock and not the clip on type.

I am really set for 190xprob or 055xprob + ballhead. but can't seem to find them locally

The Slik 700 has been very reliable and sturdy for me but be honest with yourself about how you want to use it. It does setup fairly fast but it's heavy (<8lbs). I used to believe that the extra weight wouldn't be a big deal but I was wrong. I'm now in the market for a decent CF tripod.
