I have a SIgma 10-20 that I have been using with my 50D and 30D. I am planning on purchasing a 5D Mark II in a few days. Will the SIgma 10-20 work with the 5D or is it like the EF-S series? The ads say the lens is for digital cameras. Taken at face value it should work with the 5D. But will it?

Thanks.

it will mount but it will vignette until about 14mm or so...at least that's what it does on my old film camera...i've seen someone in the 10-20mm thread that would use a 1.4TC on the lens with his 5D...

What he said ^^^^

I would trade it for a Canon 17-40L if you can.

Yep, it will vignette....ALOT.

Buy a 17-40. You'll LOVE the extra corner sharpness. Also, they cost about the same (!)

As the others have said, it will vignette. It will work though. Might have to give it a go on my 5DII to see how crazy-wide it looks!

Thanks folks. A couple of things that I muse about.

First while I have the 10-20, I don't really use it a lot. I use my 24-70 and 70-200 much more.

Second, I am looking forward to using my Lensbaby w/ Fisheye optic because of the vignetting.

Third, I use vignette filters in Nik not often but enough.

I understand what you guys are saying. It is a problem when you don't want the vignette. I'm just saying that its another of little fine points like preaching sharp then adding a soft focus filter to the lens or in processing. Using noise reduction and adding grain.

It's all about control, isn't it?

see you want the vignetting effect so you bought a lens to make it happen. Usually people dont want permanent vignetting from their lens. As your other point is that a lens should be sharp all the time and adding a soft filter is to just have the effect that you want. You dont want the lens to be soft all the time other wise what are you going to do when you want a sharp picture? Same thing goes for adding grain, you want a clean image most of the time.

There's a difference between light-vignetting and mechanical vignetting. The 10-20 on FF gets severe mechanical vignetting...

I tested this a week ago or so... The hood only appears in the 10 and 11mm photos. On 14mm and on, the two photos are the same.

Photos below...
