I lagged in buying tickets for a Las Vegas weekend and decided to drive instead. Looking at what photo opportunities there are on the drive back from Vegas back home to San Diego. Thanks!

Take a few days and see Death Valley. Nothing else quite like it.

The mojave desert was quite impressive to me and it's a bit more on the way as death valley (we drove from San Diego to Las Vegas :) ).

Well, you can't go to Vegas without being in the Mojave - In fact, Death Valley is in the Mojave Desert (external link) too ;)...

Joshua Tree is pretty cool - Personally I like country roads much more that freeways - I'd look at this route (external link) - up through Julian, then past the Salton sea to Joshua Tree National Park - then on to the Mojave National Preserve - then on to Vegas... I haven't been on that route - just looked it up on GM right now, but it looks intriguing/wild... and better than San Berdu and Barstow...

There are lots of photo opportunities around the Salton Sea area - from abandoned yacht clubs to beautiful sunsets over the lake.

Good route wildland.Variations are at Amboy stay on old 66 to Goffs turn off and go north, catch 164 to 95 at Searchlight up to Boulder City and then to Vegas. Long drive but worth it. P.S. don't take any dirt roads easy to get lost or stuck. Bring plenty of water and warm clothing in the winter. Remember civilization ends 100 yards from the roads.

Depending on how much you want to drive. I'd take the I-15 to the I-215. Then take I-10 to Hwy.62 to Route 66 to Hwy.95 then up to Vegas. Depending on when you leave, say in a few weeks you could get flowers the whole way. You'll also get Amboy, the salt ponds and many other interesting views.

Or outside of Amboy you cam take Kelbaker RD to Kelso Cima Rd and that takes you up to I-15 near stateline.

Heh, no worries, after my comment I noticed you're in Amsterdam and not necessarily an expert in American desert geography :D... I work in the northern Mojave sometimes, and I'm no expert in it either.
