This was a surprise to me that the 550D would have such a feature. But man sounds like it could be cool for some uses.

Could the 55D be classified as a spy camera. ;-)a

...but it can only do it in SD mode. I look forward to the day when we have this feature for full HD video.

what's so cool about the feature? isn't it the same as magnifying the video in post?

Hard to say. SD has a resolution of 640 X 480, or 307,200 whereas 1080p has a resolution of 2,073,600, or about 7 times as much.

However, the question is - does it encode it differently. When you zoom in onto a 1080p encode, there is plenty of macro blocks - but at this size, will it be encoded differently to make its appearance better then if you were to just crop in.

I don't know.

Sounds about right. That would mean that one could take the 1920x1080 video and just crop the 640x480 part, or better, crop 960x540 which would be 2x and still wide format. Still makes my 70-200 reach out to (200*1.6)*2=640mm.

You can crop videos yourself. It is very easy.
I use VisiCrop for this.

btw, i didn't mean to put a downer on this thread. i'm interested to see what people could do with it, creatively. and actually, i think i've figured out at least one reason for the crop mode: saving memory.

maybe you don't need a high resolution video (for whatever reason), then you can use the crop mode to save memory space.

i can't figure out the occasion to use that, though.

Wrong crop mode there. 7x crop mode is when you want extra reach, like turning that 70-200 into a 1400mm monster. It doesn't save any more memory than non-crop mode VGA video.
