Elinchrom 44cm Silver Beauty Dish w/ Honeycomb ( a brief look)

Hey Everyone,

I bought an Eli 44cm Silver BD, with a Honeycomb grid. A little history here: I live in Shanghai and ordered this dish because they were also selling a grid with it. Ordered form the official Eli distributor in the mainland. I like the small size and always wanted to get it, but was afraid of not being able to 'grid' it - so lo and behold I took the leap when I saw this. It's not on their official China Elinchrom site, but it is on their 'Taobao' site which is the Chinese equivalent of Fleabay.

I took a few crappy pics (apologize in advance), but I was excited to share this with the board. This isn't any attempt at a technical study - as I'm technically challenged to begin with

1) Set - they threw in this DVD too:

2) The grid is attached to the dish by three latches like so:

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4390188624_e93feb9709_o.jpg

3) Grid attached to dish. As you see, its not very snug - part hardware issue and partly because of the lack on an interior ledge for it to sit on. And of course the edge of the beauty dish is rounded so it can't really sit flush straight out of the box:

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4390188692_6aa90e0129_o.jpg

4) Test shot : Mounted on Quadra 1m from wall - with only gold reflector:

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4389421009_5fae07d38c_o.jpg

5) Test shot: same as above , except with grid. I'm assuming since it's not so snug that its causing that weird texture from the honeycomb as it feathers out?

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2691/4389421033_dc263a7176_o.jpg

6) Here's a close up of how the grid fits on the dish. As you can see its not a perfect fit and will require a little DIY - I'm hoping some of you guys can chime in on some suggestions. I'm sure gaff tape can remedy it real quick, but any thoughts on a more elegant solution?

I'm thinking about gluing a thin rubber 'gasket' around the rear face of the grid.

There are 100 cm grids for aftermarket Octaboxes - I may try pick one up soon, but thinking about it - I have a pair of Eli umbrellas, a 3.5m Quadra cable, a 40cm Quadra SB, and a 14cm deflector kit coming tomorrow - too many toys so little time to experiment - ;)

BTW - I saw this thread over at MM (not a member so can't post) and it really pertains to the arrival of my new dish.

Very interesting. I think there are many of us that have thought about getting either the Elinchrom 17" or 27" but have hesitated due to the lack of a grid. I'm aware of the fact that there are third party grids that will fit or can be modded but I haven't seen anything here in the US that caught my interest enough for me to want to try it.

It appears in your test image with the grid you are getting a pattern casted by the honeycomb. I would suggest a larger center diffuser or adjusting the diffuser closer to the flash tube to remedy this issue. I don't believe it is caused by the edge or lack of gasket in my experience. It will be worth a try...

Regarding the projected honeycomb pattern of the grid... as Jerry says its light from the flash tube that's not being deflected that causes it. I had the same problem - pushing the deflector closer to the flash tube helped... but my eventual fix was to use the larger Elinchrom deflector --> https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=725700

(and Jerry was 100% right in that thread too ; -)

Dear Jerry and Rai,

Thanks for the inputs - I was using the stock 11cm deflectors and haven't played with distance to tube yet. I have a 14cm set on the way - will try that one too If i ever get out of the office. I also found that the 11cm deflector wasn't really 'centered' on the Quadra head, was dipping down a bit - again, haven't had much time to play except for those quick snaps Friday night.

Hey Mark,

I'm sure it is. But it's only sold here in Mainland China I think - and directly from the Eli distributor in GuangZhou beacuse they make it themselves. Even my local distributor in Shanghai was unaware of it.

Cheers,

Pete
