I'll have to look into that movie. I've never heard of it before.

Made in the mid-50's. Jimmy Stewart was actually either a B-17 or B-29 pilot in real life. I'm a big Jimmy Stewart fan. Probably one of the best movies ever printed.

He was a pre-war B-17 IP who then went overseas and flew combat missions in both B-17s and B-24s.

If I read the Wiki article correctly, he was in on the infamous Schweinfurt (sp?) raid...

I guess I could have looked at the wiki. I remember they mentioned that when A&E did the Biography on him.

Oh and a BIG +1 for Strategic Air Command. The B-36 "Profile Mission" aerial footage is spectacular.

He was based at Tibenham during the war less than 20 minutes from where i live, the base is still used for gliding and most of the runways are still there.

Great shots, would love to have seen a B-36 fly. Also a fan of the SAC film.

The B-36 eventually lost out to the aircraft carrier in terms of US Power projection.

They had all kinds of wild ideas with this plane, the jet engines were an add on, there was a variant/experiment to carry it's own escort fighter, or recon aircraft in the belly.

Got any shots of the Missile Silo?

;)

If you're talking about the Titan Missile Museum south of Tucson, I have a gallery HERE. (external link)

The B-36 was the predecessor for the B-47. She led the way for jet related long-range bombers. If you haven't yet, you need to get Strategic Air Command w/ Jimmy Stewart. Has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. He transitions from the B-36 into the B-47. Sorry for chasing that rabbit.:o

The actual B-47 cockpit used in the filming of Strategic Air Command is displayed at the March Field Air Museum in Riverside, Ca.

(These are old pictures and I'm sure the display looks much better now.)

That's neat. I might be heading to Vandenburg AFB to visit a friend of mine. I might have to make the trip. We don't have any cool aircraft near us. Just the aircraft that carried Kennedy's body back from TX. ;)

nice B-36 pictures. As far as I know this is the only aircraft the military ever outfitted with a nuclear reactor for propulsion. Well, if there were any others, then they would have to shoot you....

They did carry a reactor aloft to test weight/balance and shielding issues but I don't believe it ever actually powered an aircraft.

I re-examined the document my daughter gave me from a Lockheed engineer who worked on the project. The wording is different than I remember, and it does not seem to indicate that it actually powered the aircraft in any of the 47 flights. So, it sounds like you are right. If you heard about this one, then I am sure you hear about the C-130 prototypes they built using JATO pods for very short takeoff and landings???

Yup...

As well as the Carrier tests the Navy did with a C-130...
