I don't know what your old self portrait looked like, but I like this one.
I like how you have the light 'just right' on your right eye, and the inner rim of your glasses, that makes the shot right there.
It doesn't matter to me that your hair is blending into the background, in fact, it helps it, in this case, sometimes it doesn't...
That is a good shot for my tastes.
