I'm used to most things in photography having some workable algorythm for success. There are processes and calculations to get a proper exposure or depth of field etc.

But gels seem to be trial and error.

I was shooting a basketball game. Before the game was parent recognition night. I would have liked to shoot the parents and kids at center court with a little fill flash but I didn't know off hand how to gel my flash.

I know this court is ~4000k and +25 on the tint slider for correct WB. Is there any way to convert such settings into a gel selection?

I'm certainly no expert, but I think with your canon flash either a 1/4 or maybe 1/2 cut of CTO would have got you close.

I can't really do the math, but a standard full CTO converts 6500K to 3200K. Your Canon flash is probably probably around 5500-5700K by default
