Make sure yours isn't losing photos, then start using something like DIM from http://alanlight.com Professional wedding photographer, solution architect and general technical guy with multiple Amazon Web Services certifications.

jabtas Goldmember  More info | You will see this if you delete any pics on the card before you download to the computer, the camera has already used that file number so it will not use it again. Tim

I took a series of pics over the weekend and the first two of the batch are numbered IMG_4890 and ING_4892, I must have deleted number 4891 in the camera. BTW this is with a 300D so I am assuming that the 20D works the same Slightly OT but I finally got over 5000 pics in total this weekend WHOO-HOO 5000? this makes me feel better about doing 600 on saturday! what were you shooting?
