I would like to get a fast prime lens for this type of photography.

Sorry for the crappy pic. I was using my old Canon P&S S70 (bought it

2002). I used manual mode (ISO 400 , 28mm , f2.8 , shutter 1/60 not sure. )

The picture below is a standard basketball court and I took the shot 5

feet away from the edge of the court. I already have a Sigma 30mm , but

I would like to take a closer shot of my son (second from right -front row)

during his Taekwondo session.

I`m not allowed to get closer to the court`s inside line, so I`m just wondering what is the best prime lens (non L) focal depth to use?

60mm , 85mm , 100mm ? on 5Dc.

Is it possible to get prime lens on this situation that can double use as a

macro?

I'd say the 85 f1.8 fits the bill. One of Canon's fastest focusing lenses for fast action...

Or maybe the new sigma 85 1.4 if you are willing to wait a bit

Thanks guys! I think I`m going to wait for the Sigma. I like the Canon 85 too, but the warranty covers only 12 months.

You might try out using a zoom at different focal lengths to establish the best prime for your needs. If you have to sit where these shots were taken, maybe even an 85mm won't let you get good close-up shots of faces or fill the frame with a full body shot (for forms, or get decent close action for sparring). Although depending on the level of light, and your camera's ISO capabilities, cropping compensates.

85mm 1.8 was what I was thinking as well. I'm looking into getting one for myself sometime soon.

I've been using my 24-70 2.8 thus far for my daughter's tae kwon do/judo classes, and it works pretty well.

I'd suggest longer than 85mm. Maybe the 100mm f/2, or the 135mm f/2.8 Soft Focus (just don't use the Soft Focus feature of course).

I just got the 5Dc and seems like the Canon 100m f2 fit the bill. I just noticed that the background blur from the Canon 85 and 100 are a bit distracting, unlike the Sigma 30 I used to have....
Is there a fast prime lens below $500 that is comparable to the sharpness and background blur of Sigma prime?

85mm is great but I prefer the 24-70mm for the zoom factor if needed.

I don't know about kids, but for adults in typical gym lighting you need more than f/2.8. Not to mention, a sharp/fast-focusing zoom costs a lot more than the 85mm f/1.8. And at the end of the day it's still a stop slower. If you have the $$ a good mid-range zoom is certainly more versatile overall, and is probably fast enough for kids. BUT the prime is deadly sharp and you'd get the shot at ISO800 instead of 1600 etc..

Also - not allowed inside the lines to take a photo...of a kid's TKD class? Wow they're a little too strict IMO. I can't believe they wouldn't let you so long as you don't make a habit out of it.
