Hi Folks

I was reading this post today on the POTN Forums about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mark II’s (or Nifty Fifty) ability to take photos wide open at f/1.8.

I haven’t had much success with the Nifty Fifty’s auto focus at such wide apertures although it might be due to the lack of micro adjust on any of my camera bodies. But I thought the Nifty Fifty was defiantly capable to take clear photos when manually focused.

What was used in the test:
Body: Canon EOS 500D (T1i)
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mark II (Nifty Fifty)
Tripod: Manfrotto 055 XProB with 488RC2 Head and nameless macrorail
Flash: Canon Speedlite 580EXII

The Test:
I originally actually tried this test with the Canon EOS 5D but decided to do the final test with the 500D mainly due to the fact that the 5D does not have live view.
The subject is a stick of lip-balm sitting on my Macbook Pro. The Nifty Fifty was set to focus to it’s closest capable focus. With the 500D in live view at 10x magnification I used the macrorail to precisely focus on the stick of lip-balm. All photos were taken with a remote to help reduce vibrations.

All photos were taken with the following settings:
Shutter Speed: 1/200 sec
Aperture: 1.8-2.8
Iso: 100
Flash Power: 1/8

After taking the photos, they were introduced into Lightroom to simply balance out the lighting since the same flash setting was used over one stop of light.

Lightroom “Brightness” Adjustments
f/1.8: -10
f/2.0: 0
f/2.2: +15
f/2.5: +25
f/2.8: +50

I first have the original 5 photos, then 100% crop versions of those photos.

Conclusion:
My copy of the Nifty Fifty seems to get a wee bit sharper from f/2.2 and on. F/1.8 and f/2.0 seem a tab less sharp, but not by much. I think the Nifty Fifty is very capable of producing sharp photos wide open when the focusing is correct. However the autofocus does not seem to be able to be dead on most of the time and with thin DOF produced by large apertures like 1.8-2.8 the Nifty Fifty will appear to be "soft" mainly due to poor autofocus. I plan to do a autofocus test some time.

EDIT: I am not endorsed by or endorsing Chap Stick nor Apple Inc.

i agree, mine seems to be quite sharp wide open, although i am no pixel peeper. my autofocus is quite accurate even in low light.

i used it recently for a live band for fun and it preformed quite well.

Yep, thats about what I thought.

First time I had this out, I was shooting kayaking at f/1.8 and the images came out a little soft. Try and use f/2.8 where I can, but the images were definitely usable at 1.8.

Heres my test. This is 100% from a point just right of the centre. Pics are 1.8, 2.0, 2.8 and then 4.0

With a real USM this lens would be a winner.
It's inability to well is why I sold mine.

yeah, i think canon just needs to update their whole 50mm prime line with new USM... ive found that none of the 50's focus fast enough for sports. (although ive never used the 50L just heard about its slow focus...)

yes mine is also soft at 1.8 to 2. At 2.8 it is already sharp.

Like others, mine is soft at 1.8 to 2.2 but sometimes necessary to use at those levels (indoor, low light etc), where the results are usable, especially if combined with higher ISO (800+), though if you do pixel peep, it will be somewhat noisy too. I think it works best for me at the 2.2 to 2.8 range, where it gives decent bokeh but is also pretty sharp overall. A keeper since I can't afford the 1.4 or 1.2.
