I like this kind of processing so will go for this one, Rob.

I think they all have merit Rob, but pushed for a decision I would vote no. 1 - but I would have to crop that right hand side it's a little distracting... :D

Thanks for the input guys - I have got a lot of cropping and retouching to do yet, didnt want to get too carried away before i knew what processing would be applied

Rob, looks like you got some nice comments when you posted those shots in the People section. And got some good advice as well. Good work there!

Yes i did - thanks for urging me to post over there Pete :)

This one for me. Care to share? i love it

Its a split tone using a cyan in the highlights and a tan in the shadows. about 1 stop over exposed in lightroom and then dialed back with recovery to get the look i wanted.

Number 1 for me, though it looks like there's something wrong with her right leg from the mottling on the calf which is accentuated by the B&W conversion.

I think thats just from where she is cold - we were outside and it was very windy!

I think i will go with #1 as the style then - many thanks for your help guys!

thanks rob.

No worries.
I will try and give you a bit more detail when I get home this eve and also show you the original exposure. Do you use lightroom?

Looks like a split tone effect with tan highlights and a light grey/blue in the shadows. The contrast has been lowered for the overall scene, but brushed back in to highlight certain areas of the image.
The exposure looks like it has been pushed a bit too.
Im not sure if the flare is real or not, but you could probably recreate that using the brush tool if you are patient enough. Would be a lot easier in PS though.

Thats my take on it anyway :)

Dumb question (probably): regarding HD video in these new-fangled cameras. Looks like I have no real choice but to go with Final Cut Express but according to the documentation it doesn't do 1080p, which it seems my camera chucks out. Any help? I'm a bit lost on all this video lark.

sorry can't help on this one fella, not really done anything on the 7D worth editing! but I'm on PC so I probably will have different options versus the Mac anyways!?!?

- have you actually taken a photo with the new camera yet? I had a look on your Flickr and there's nowt on there! ;):D

- and I'm about to head over to the airport with Adrian to see if we can spot some planes and take their photos - fingers crossed for no volcanic ash clouds!
