Rob - yes I haven't skipped a hole, the only difference is it looks like you are using the threaded holes which have been drilled out but this shouldn't make a difference since they should all the evenly spaced. The non-lever side is fine... just the lever side sticks out in the centre a little too much. I'm guessing the strip I am using is thinner at the top. I'll try grab a picture later.

Yeah, I happen to be using the drilled out 1/4"-20 for those shots. I don't pay attention to which holes I'm using now that the 1/4"-20 mount is usable.

I guess I just can't picture what you're describing. I'll post a shot of the QR with the 9" x 36" strip.

HI Rai,

Ok, I think I see what you mean. When I first assembled the small strip with the Quick Ring I noticed that but didn't give it any thought since it still allowed me to have a nice tight seal even though there was a bulge from the corner or the ring. Unfortunately you can't turn the ring so a flat edge is parallel to the edge of the strip.

I don't find it interferes or bothers me at all. I'm much more into the fact that I can use the Quick Ring and it's a beautiful thing. It's totally changed my outlook on third party modifiers and although some might disagree I've been finding recently that with the exception of modifiers like the 39" Deep Octa, the quality of light isn't any better or amazing with Elinchrom modifiers over others.

I love the ease of setup and breakdown with Elinchrom modifiers but now that I use the Quick Ring I'm finding that boxes and strips go together faster than with the Elinchrom's and you can produce beautiful light with a lot of third party modifiers.

This is the Quick Ring with a small 9" x 36" strip box mounted.

Rob - yep that's it.... I also find it leaves the material a little loose in other places also. Doesn't bother me too much especially considering it means no more struggling with rods under tension + in an octa or square softbox it won't be an issue. The deep Octa is my only Elinchrom modifier - I really like the way it folds away like an umbrella into its neat carry case. Like you I find the quality of light from my Ebay modifiers just fine. Much more important to focus on how to control the light rather than fuss over what brand modifier to use :)

Agreed, and since the small strip is the only modifier that has this issue, it's a nonissue. The large strip is fine and the square and rectangular softboxes are fine, as well as the octa.

Not sure. I think it will. I haven't tried that one yet. So far the only inserts we know will work at the SP Systems and the Photek.

Tried the QR with my 150cm Visico octa today - works nicely. I notice though that when in the collapsed position the two rods in the plastic pivot points pull out and fall short of their end pockets so you just need to be conscious to make sure they slot in when it opens. Not sure if the ladies would have trouble locking it into position though as it takes a fair bit of force (lucky I dont have lady thumbs ; ) It's holding a fair bit of tension and when you release it, it really pops out with some force. Makes set up and tear down much more convenient so thumbs up.

Great thread.

Do you guys mind posting a couple links to third-party octaboxes that work well with the Quick Ring + SP Insert combo?

Third party? Cheetah is third party. The ring works with ANY standard softbox or strip and if you open up the diameter of the 1/4"-20 mounting hole you can then use the ring with an octa.

So Im not sure what you want to see. It's going to look the same regardless of the brand or type of box.

I guess I'll be the first to try it. Thanks

We had a report earlier in this thread, Rob, that claims the Red-Wing insert does work with the Quick Ring:

Dave,

Did we determine that the height of the Red Wing was the same as the SP or Photek?

No, we didn't, Rob, but I'll bet you dollars to donuts the Red-Wing = the SP = the Photek.

And I thought you did retain everything.
